Abstract

Introduction: Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS) and Robin Sequence (RS) share mandibular deficiency as a similar clinical finding and consequent upper airway obstruction and respiratory failure. Airway volumes and information on airflow dynamics from individuals with these clinical conditions have not yet been studied and compared with individuals with morphologically normal mandibles. Objectives: The aim of this study will be to compare the morphology, dimensions and volume of the upper airway, as well as, the airflow dynamics of individuals with TCS and RS and individuals with normal mandible morphology. Methods: The sample consisted of computed tomography (CT) from the archive of the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo. The TCS Group will consist of 17 individuals with TCS with a mean age of 11.5 years (7 males, 10 females). The RS Group will be paired in number of participants, by sex and age with the TCS group as well as the CONT GROUP (control). Quantitative assessments will be performed on three-dimensional face and posterior airway reconstructions using the Mimics Innovation Suite 17.0 software (Materialize, Leuven, Belgium). The computational fluid dynamics measurements will be performed in Fluent software (ANSYS). The intergroup comparison will be performed using the ANOVA / Tukey test or Kruskal Wallis / Dunns (p<0.05). (AU)
