Abstract

Aquatic microbiome research is increasing its relevance at the international level. Although there are some laboratories of excellence in Brazil dedicated to the study of microbiomes, they focus mostly on terrestrial ecosystems, especially soils. Few laboratories in Brazil are dedicated to the study of aquatic microbiomes, applying high throughput sequencing techniques (cutting edge technology that revolutionized this research area). The Visiting Professor Carlos Pedrós-Alió is one of the leading scientists in microbiome research, who works in a broad range of aquatic ecosystems, from the ocean to extreme environments, and his visit to the Laboratory of Microbial Processes and Biodiversity (LMPB) at the UFSCar would provide an unique opportunity to enhance aquatic microbiome research in São Paulo State and South America. Besides the research activities in collaboration within the ongoing projects on the LMPB, he will participate in the uSudAqua workshop, where several researchers from all Latin America develop studies on aquatic microbial ecology at the continental scale, and he will participate in a pos-graduation course at the UFSCar open to all pos-graduation students and early career researchers, which would be a unique opportunity to share experiences and generate synergies.
