Quantum field theory under the influence of external conditions

This project is dedicated to various aspects of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) in the presence of background fields and/or boundaries, as well as in curved spacetime. The main focus of this project is on applications to the so-called Dirac materials which include graphene, topological insulators, Weyl and Dirac semimetals. In these materials, the dynamics of quasiparticles is governed by quasirelativistic Dirac- type equations making the use of QFT methods most natural. We propose to compute the polarization tensor which defines the optical properties of these materials and their Casimir interaction. We shall study particle creation in external fields and aspects of quasihermitian Quantum Mechanics. A part of the project is dedicated to quantum anomalies and their applications in condensed matter physics. We are also planning to address two particular problems of QFT in curved space: calculation of the partition function in low-dimensional holographic models and particle creation in the field of gravitational waves.
