The concept of "research excellence" has been subjecting to evolution because research has been more and more seen as broadly connected to social, economic, and political dimensions. Several authors have highlighted increasing concern over the need to measure and communicate the intertwined relations between knowledge production with scientific rigor and its effects on society in a movement to diversify and create evidence of impacts in multiple dimensions. This trend has influenced the priorities and practices of funding agencies, research centers, higher education organizations, and governmental bodies. In this context, the focus of this project is to carry out advanced research on indicators and methods to unfold the dynamics of knowledge production, its connections and impacts over different segments of society. The project aims not only to carry multidisciplinary research on the frontiers of knowledge in this field but also to contribute to three institutional targets: a) promote learning that can be useful for policy design and funding instruments; b) create evidence to be employed as accountability directed to different types of stakeholders; and c) create valuable evidence for advocacy, demonstrating effects of investing in STI and how to improve them systematically. It is a proposal that evolves from previous projects carried by FAPESP and focused on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) indicators in São Paulo. It points to a stream of research called "research on research" or "science of science policy." (AU)
