For many years, the planning and operation of low voltage distribution networks were carried out based on load curves estimated from historical values recorded in measurement campaigns. This strategy was revised with the modernization of distribution systems, where electric utility companies started to use smart concentrators to collect information from low voltage consumers. However, in extensive networks as in Brazil, such concentrators' installation requires a high investment. Moreover, consumers in urban areas are increasingly using distributed energy resources such as photovoltaic systems and electric vehicles. The massive use of these resources allows the creation of aggregation zones from the coverage area of smart concentrators to offer new market structures. This research project proposes the development of methodologies to help utilities in the optimal allocation of smart concentrators and the creation of aggregation zones. The aggregation zones will allow obtaining information necessary for planning low voltage networks and for analyzing new market structures that may arise with the use of distributed energy resources. These methodologies will consider both the local characteristics of the distribution companies' concession area and the restrictions related to the communication technologies used between concentrators and smart meters.
