Dynamics of biodeposits originated from perna perna mussel cultures in the coast of São Paulo State


The spatial and temporal dynamics of biodeposits in the sediment near a mussel culture located in Praia da Cocanha, Caraguatatuba (SP) will be experimentally studied, in order to support the proposal of mitigating measures of the impacts caused by mitiliculture on the benthic environment. Biodeposits will be quantified by the contents of total carbon and nitrogen, total organic matter and acid volatile sulfides. In the Experiment 1, we will study the spatial dynamics of the biodeposits in the sediment next to a long-line of mussel culture with at least 2 years of operation. For this, sediment samples will be collected monthly, in points located near the long-line, defined according a previous hydrodynamic study and in a point located in a place without influence of mussel culture. In the Experiment 2, the temporal dynamics of the biodeposits will be studied in the sediment near to a newly installed long-line. Quarterly, from the occupation of the long-line, samples of the sediment will be collected at points demarcated according to the results of the first experiment. In the Experiment 3, we will determine the time necessary for the biodeposits from a long-line with at least 2 years of operation, to be dispersed after removal of the long-line. For this purpose, quarterly sediment samplings will be carried out at points also demarcated according to the results of Experiment 1. The samples will be collected using a grab sampler and sediment traps, being analyzed in a private laboratory. Three-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model will be processed for the entire period of the project, in order to determine the space-time variations of currents, temperature and salinity in the region of interest. The data will be compared using two-way ANOVA for the variables distance and time. (AU)
