Software for dosimetry planning of photobiomodulation therapy treatments


The objective of this project is to develop and validate an App that might be used for planning the treatments with photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). The App will consider the anatomy and physiology of the biological tissues of the region to be illuminated, the physical characteristics of the patient and the characteristics of the diseases and symptoms to be treated. Users will interact with the system through two possible interfaces, one free and one premium, according to a previously contracted plan. Information will be collected about the clinical evolution of patients undergoing treatment. Machine learning methods will be used to analyze treatment results and to feedback the simulator model to perform the optimization of treatments. Our motivation is to systematize and optimize the treatments using PBMT, which is highly dependent on the optical parameters applied to the target tissue to obtain the desired biological effect. The simulation will be performed through the Monte Carlo method for the propagation of light photons in biological tissues. The focus of this project is the application of PBMT for pain treatment, which have non-superficial target tissues. Thus, it is of great importance the planning of treatment and the prediction of optical parameters. The target audience of the App is the health professional who uses the PBMT in their clinical practice. Thus, the app will help these professionals to plan the treatment more reliably, optimized and systematized. In addition, it will allow new professionals using PBMT to obtain good therapeutic results from the beginning of their activities. (AU)
