Charge and spin instabilities in unconventional superconductors

Over the past two years, our group developed a research program based on X-ray spectroscopy of quantum materials [1,2,3]. It is the purpose of this project to provide continuous financial support to the activities of our group during the next 2 years. We propose a research program based upon , but not restricted to, the availability of the state of the art facilities of the forthcoming EMA and IPE beamlines in SIRIUS. Our group is now experienced on a great range of X-ray based techniques that we intend to apply to solid state systems. In particular, we propose a systematic investigation by x-ray based techniques on the relation between charge and spin instabilities and the onset of a superconducting ground state. Suitable material platforms for this exploration are provided by the 1111 iron based superconductors LnFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} (Ln= La, Ce, Nd, Sm) and by new families of doped transition metal dichalcogenides Ni_{x}ZrTe_{2} and Cu_{x}ZrTe_{2}. Respectively, the mentioned material platforms allows an investigation between the relation of spin and charge instabilities and superconductivity. X-ray based techniques of interest are X-ray diffraction and absorption under extreme conditions (high magnetic fields, extreme pressures, and low temperatures), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The present project is intended to mainly provide financial support in three directions: i) group mobility; ii) computational power to data analysis; iii) sample storage and preparation at our in house facilities. This modest financial support will allow us to contribute to the advance of the state of the art in the field of unconventional superconductors. (AU)
