X-ray magnetic circular dichroism as a tool to probe quantum phenomena

Abstract

This project aims that Dr. Flavio Garcia, from the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas, becomes a visiting researcher at Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) for the period of 12 months to support the activities of the Extreme Methods of Analysis (EMA) group, in particular helping on the development of the scientific goals of the Young Researcher project "New topological states of matter under extreme conditions ( 2018/00823-0)". The candidate has been a lead scientist at LNLS for almost 10 years, working on the study of magnetic materials from the most fundamental point of view as well as developing new synchrotron instrumentations. All these extensive experience makes him the today's most qualified scientist to tackle the three main topics proposed in this project as follows: 1- Commissioning of the x-ray magnetic dichroism setup for the EMA beamline. The large and well recognized experience of the Dr. Flavio Garcia on the study of magnetic materials as well on X-ray techniques will be extremely valued for the success of the commissioning of EMA beamline; 2- Direct determination of the Spin Hall effect. Using the state of art instrument that will be available at EMA beamline we propose to use grazing incidence circular dichroism to directly measure the spin accumulation profile induced by the spin current generated by Spin Hall Effect in several types of compounds. 3- Use of x-ray dichroism as a tool to probe topological magnetic structures. By the spin and orbital selectivity of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism technique we will explore the effect of the chirality on the magnetic properties of topological magnetic structures. (AU)
