Genomic abnormality associated with vaginal bleeding in women using the levonogestrel intrauterine system

Abstract

Vaginal bleeding is the main reason for discontinuation in women using levonogestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUD-LNG). Currently, there is no test able to predict which woman would have an unsatisfactory menstrual pattern. Objective: To evaluate the gene expression profile of women who use IUD-LNG with or without abnormal vaginal bleeding during the first year of usage. Methods: One hundred women from the Family Planning clinic of CAISM/UNICAMP who have chosen the IUD-LNG as a contraceptive method will be included. These women will be submitted to an endometrial biopsy immediately before the placement of the IUD-LNG and also will be under a bleeding pattern assessment for 1 year. After 12 months, gene expression associated with inflammation genes (FKBP51, NR3C1, ADAMTS1, ADH1A, CLEC3B, VEGF, CYP3A4, NR1I2, NPTX1, SERPINE1, STC1) will be evaluated among women who have had normal bleeding, abnormal bleeding as well as non-bleeding ones. For statistical analysis, either Ç2 test or Fisher's exact test will be used in order to check the difference between endometrial gene expression. (AU)
