Validation of predictive equation for resting energy expenditure in patients with head and neck cancer

Abstract

With the inflammatory process associated with various types of neoplasia, patients may develop hyporexia, weight loss, sarcopenia and cachexia, directly influencing body composition, especially muscle mass depletion, basal energy expenditure and treatment outcome. Resting energy expenditure estimation methods generally do not yield accurate results, and the variation in this type of patient is very large. Objectives: To validate the Souza-Singer equation to estimate resting energy expenditure in patients with head and neck cancer. Methodology: The work will be carried out with a group of participants diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Participants' sociodemographic data, anthropometric assessment and body composition performed by spectroscopy electrical impedance (total water and its distribution, tissue mass and phase angle), biochemical evaluation, and resting energy expenditure (REE) by indirect calorimetry will be collected. Statistical analysis will be performed with Bland - Altman test to evaluate the agreement between the methods, with significance level d0.05. (AU)
