Abstract

With the growing demand for new materials with better performance or knowledge of the pillars that make up materials science, the essential requirement for the formation of high-level professionals becomes necessary. These materials knowledge depends on the structure, properties, and processing techniques, by the way, are done by chemical analysis, mechanical testing and characterization by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). In order to analyze the materials and identify the fracture mechanism, it is necessary to obtain and install the SEM-EDS. Analysis and characterization by scanning electron microscopy can cover various materials such as metals, polymers, biological materials (teeth, bones, insects, plants), micro and nanomaterials, compounds and nanocomposites, electronic sensors, new materials, cosmetics, civil engineering structures, materials recycling, and mineral waste. In addition, it is possible to identify and quantify the material composition, in a qualitative form, by EDS, being one of the main tools to define quantitative techniques. The acquisition and installation of SEM-EDS assist research on these materials and their phenomena, enabling collaboration with the Institution's level of publication. (AU)
