Abstract

This research project aims to develop, in an innovative way, an approach addressed to the importance of the creation of Nature Conservation Units (UC) and the impact of it in the functionality change of the territory, based on the principle of appreciation of the natural and cultural heritage within the UCs. The cultural landscape approach overcomes the fragmented treatment of natural and cultural heritage, thus creating a unique basis for managing the transformation of the natural landscape over the years, as well as the built cultural heritage. The use of computational technologies based on geographic information systems (GIS) and building information modeling (BIM) combined in a new cultural landscape management model, the Historical District Information Model (HDIM), will provide an interactive basis for the process of inventory, documentation, conservation, and availability of data, streamlined the management and enjoyment of UC. To this end, a multidisciplinary team of experts in the fields of architecture, engineering, geology, computing, surveying, archeology and social sciences was gathered, providing a holistic approach to natural and cultural heritage built and modified by the man. The project encompasses reality capture technologies (laser scanning sensing and photogrammetry), and modern Information and Communication Technologies for building information modeling (BIM), geographic information systems (GIS) and immersive environments (augmented, virtual and mixed reality). These technologies will support the bundle of UC's historical, archaeological and material research. The project thus proposes to support the management of the PAs of the State of São Paulo through the articulation of three pillars: (i) safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage; (ii) inventory of cultural assets; (iii) heritage and environmental education (dissemination and enjoyment of crystallised knowledge in cultural assets and in the transformation of the natural landscape). These pillars align with the priority themes 4 and 10 of the FAPESP / BIOTA - SIMA - FF CALL, given that the results will provide subsidies for the knowledge of ecosystem services (regulatory and cultural services) with the potential for their use by public policies (elaboration of institutional protocols) and greater effectiveness of the management of the UC in the fulfilment of its institutional mission. Furthermore, would allow the dialog with the objectives established in the National System of Nature Conservation Units (SNUC), mainly in the aspect to the protection of the relevant characteristics of the UC, enhancing and promoting the education and interpretation of the natural and cultural characteristics of this environment.
