Do selective universities promote social mobility?

We aim to investigate the impact of selective public universities on students' academic and labor market outcomes, using administrative data from Unicamp (entrance exam and undergraduate records) and the Annual Report on Social Information (RAIS, Ministry of Economy). We also plan to draw on interview data to assess the effect of affirmative action programs, such as Paais and ProFIS, on Unicamp composition and students' academic and labor market outcomes. We will construct a centralized database merging Unicamp data from 2000 to 2019 with RAIS data from 2002 to 2017. The quantitative studies will use statistical and econometric methods, such as difference-in-differences models and regression discontinuity designs. In the qualitative studies, we will analyze data produced through interviews based on conventional methods of qualitative research, mainly through the identification of relationships and correlations that can be interpreted as patterns. Our central hypothesis is that access to selective higher education increases individuals' salary incomes, and this increase mainly benefits underprivileged students. Therefore, we expect to find a positive impact of affirmative action policies such as Paais and ProFIS on academic and labor market outcomes. Our results will allow us to confirm or not this hypothesis and to determine the magnitudes of these effects. (AU)
