Evaluation of the toxicological conditions of the Pouca Saúde River localized on the right bank of the Santos, SP harbor area

Abstract

The Pouca Saude River is located on the right bank of the port of Santos and it is called a name given to a mangrove river branch, which has no source and is always under the influence of the tide. The Pouca Saude River, crosses Santos Dumont Avenue, with banks near the Santo Amaro Hospital in Guaruja (SP). Along the river there are many stilts, which throw sewage and household waste into the waters and industries that dispose of their effluents. This objective will be to analyze the physicochemical and toxicology's conditions of the Pouca Saude River. For this, three samples of surface waters of the Pouca Saude River will be collected at three different points, in the four seasons of the year, these results will be compared with the control point located near the open sea at the beach edge for physical and chemical tests (pH, alkalinity), turbidity, salinity, oils and greases, dissolved oxygen and heavy metals). Toxicity tests will be performed with raw effluent (without and with dilution). The genotoxic potential will be evaluated by the Allium cepa L onion root germination method. Thus, with this project we intend to identify possible pollutants in water samples collected from the Pouca Saude River, to investigate the prevalence of major diseases in the region near the river, to analyze whether the toxic agent with the highest concentration in water is present in the blood sample of the dogs. Therefore, this project aims to detect the contaminants of the Pouca Saude River, develop a manual with illustrative images and conduct a population orientation campaign for children and adults avoid bathing and ingesting fish from the Rio Pouca Saude region, warning about health risks, as well as alerting polluting industries to perform decontamination maneuvers of their tributaries.
