Influence of different glaze firing protocols on Brittleness index, Vickers hardness, Fracture toughness, Crack Healing and Abrasion Resistance of ceramic CAD/CAM blocks

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of different glaze firing protocols on the brittleness index and hardness (Vickers microhardness test), fracture toughness, crack healing mechanism and abrasion resistance (volume loss) on ceramic CAD/CAM blocks (E.max CAD, IPS Empress CAD and Cerec Blocs). For this, 201 specimens will be obtained, 67 for each material, divided into 5 groups: control (C), conventional glaze (G), conventional glaze with double firing (G2), extended glaze (EG) and extended glaze with double firing (EG2). The evaluation of the brittleness index and Vickers hardness will be performed using a microdurometer, the fracture resistance will be made obtained with the three-point bend test with a notch performed on the specimens, while crack healing will be qualitatively observed using scanning electron microscopy. For abrasion resistance, a pin-on-disc tribometer will be used and volume loss will be determined on a laser optical interferometer. The results obtained in each of the tests will be submitted to descriptive statistical analysis as well as the homogeneity and homoscedasticity tests. Depending on the results of such tests, appropriate statistical treatments will be applied. (AU)
