Spatial-temporal analysis of land use and land cover in the São Paulo state using remote sensing techniques

Abstract

The objective of this project is to map, monitor and analyse changes in land use and land cover between 1970 and 2020 in the state of São Paulo, using remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques. For this, we will use information acquired by several remote orbital sensors with different spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions (Landsat MSS, TM, ETM +, OLI; Sentinel-2 MSI; Terra MODIS; PROBA-V; CBERS-4 WFI, MUX, PAN; SRTM; RapidEye; Worldview, VIIRS). In addition, ancillary information will be collected in selected areas of the São Paulo state related to vegetation, hydrography, geological and geomorphological substrate, urban area estimates and greenhouse gas emissions. This information will help answer the following question: What are the main trajectories of land use change and land cover in the state of São Paulo over the last 50 years? Firstly, a geographic database will be formed in the SPRING system developed at INPE (National Institute for Space Research). Then, digital image processing techniques will be applied to highlight the information of interest to map and monitor the state of São Paulo, specifically regarding the delimitation of the spatiotemporal distribution of native vegetation, agriculture and urban sprawl. In addition, a qualitative analysis of the geological-morphological cradle that supports the vegetation and a quantitative analysis of emissions from biomass burning will be performed. The expected results are important to understand current land use and land cover patterns in order to provide information that can support the planning and management of São Paulo State resources and its governance.
