Abstract

This research proposal contemplates the experimental study of the effect of small surface irregularities on the transition from a laminar to turbulent boundary layer. The correct forecast of this transition is of great importance for the reduction of drag in an aerodynamic project and consequently leads to the reduction of aircraft fuel consumption and the reduction of pollutant gases emission. This experimental study will use a wind tunnel specially designed for experiments of transition in the boundary layer. Measurements will include hot wire anemometry, surface pressure fluctuation measurements with microphones and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry). The research theme contemplates important phenomena for the technological development and later for the competitiveness of certain industrial segments, such as the aeronautical industry. The requested budget resources aim to improve and adapt the infrastructure available to the research group, to allow the improvement of the experiments contemplated in this study. (AU)
