In 2016, the Paris Agreement was signed by 196 state parties to pursue efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C. In order to meet these goals, countries need a plan to mitigate their emissions. Generally, such a plan is connected to a process of energy transition. Moving away from fossil fuel dominated energy supply to a more renewable one. However, moving to a renewable energy supply, such as solar or wind, is not without its challenges. Another mitigation strategy is to combine the process of carbon capture and storage (CCS) with fossil fuel energy generation. The collaboration will bring together research teams from the University of Queensland (UQ) and the University of São Paulo (USP). The project aims to deliver a number of collaborative activities to identify further research projects to investigate the role of natural gas combined with CCS as part of the energy transition. A unique element of the project will be to examine new ways to investigate the social dimensions of such a transition. Developing methods to compare how various stakeholders from across Brazil and Australia value the role of gas with CCS in the transition. It will provide new insights into what is required for achieving the energy transition and developing a sustainable energy future. (AU)
