The present proposal addresses the continuation of two long-term experiments initiated and conducted to date within the project NUCLEUS: An associated virtual center to promote improvements in the efficiency of nitrogen use in the UK and Brazil through soil- integrated plant. The subproject 1 - Nitrogen fertilization for maize/forage in rotation with soybean and its effects on in soybean was started in 2018, and sub-project 2 - Quality of soil organic matter and carbon under maize/forage crops as affected by N fertilization was started in 2014. The present proposal aims to consolidate previous results and to complement other aspects not yet explored. Thus, the objectives are: (i) to determine if growing tropical grass species inhibits soil nitrification, affecting maize yield and its response to N, reducing N losses; (ii) to study the response of maize as second crop and the efficiency of N use after soybean, and the effect of the fertilizer applied to maize in subsequent soybeans; (iii) to evaluate the effect of N on forage composition and its relationship with soil carbon stock and MOS quality; and (vi) verify the effect of N fertilization on carbon input and soil organic matter quality as affected by the grass species. The proposal is intended to reach results that allow for a better understanding of N and carbon dynamics in intercropping systems, and in the end, give subsidies for better N fertilization recommendations, improving the fertilizer use efficiency, at the same time, favoring carbon sequestration. The results will be disseminated through publication in high-impact journals, technical journals, presentation of papers in congresses, field days, lectures and, of course, Undergraduate and Graduate courses.
