The applications of ionizing radiations in different areas, such as health, industry, environment and agriculture, have a direct effect on the life quality of the population. Therefore, the improvement of methods and techniques, and the development of instruments and systems for the radiation measurement, are essential for that their use is beneficial, effective and, at the same time, to comply with all safety requirements, avoiding the adverse radiation risks. This project is based on research, development and innovation in metrology of ionizing radiations with applications in the areas of radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine, and sterilization of medical materials and instruments. The aim is to form a metrological basis for the calibration of detectors with alpha, beta, gamma and X radiations, for new dosimetric systems and methodologies in radiation metrology, using luminescent and other techniques, generating national and international technical-scientific impact and contributing for the safe use of ionizing radiations. The research methodology will consist on the development and implementation of: dosimetric materials and systems, phantoms for radiotherapy and diagnostic radiology, ionizing chambers, radiation detectors and new methodologies (for solid state detectors and polymeric gels), interacting with national and international groups of excellence in the area. Another important goal will be the training of personnel in radiation metrology applied to medicine. The originality and relevance of the proposal consist in the development, improvement and establishment of new materials, instruments and techniques useful for radiation metrology and dosimetry, including also computational simulation techniques.
