Click chemistry platform for the development of polymer-based materials for regenerative medicine

Abstract

Regenerative medicine represents a strategy for repairing functions of injured tissues, which aims at accelerating and improving the healing process. Despite the large range of commercially available biomaterials, there is a lack with respect to those which behave adequately within the human body, increasing the demand for alternative materials. The purpose of this project is to develop new polymer-based materials and to study their main features in view of their application in regenerative medicine. The aims of the proposal are the development of: i) liquid cross-linkable polymers, which are capable to crosslink when mixed with their appropriate counterpart, leading to the formation of injectable materials and ii) furan polymers based on aminoacids for the construction of scaffolds. Both types of materials will be designed based on click chemistry, namely the Diels Alder reaction because of its high efficiency and also because it is fast and of free of by-products. The materials will be characterized with respect to their chemical structure, physico-chemical properties, biocompatibility and bioreabsorption tests. (AU)
