Toxic effects of the use of hookahs and industrialized cigarettes in oral cavity

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to analyze the effect of the hookahs and industrialized cigarettes smoking habit in oral cells, as well as evaluated the salivary metabolome in these individuals. Samples will be obtained from four groups. Hookah group will be composed of 30 frequent hookah smokers, exclusively. Smoke group will be composed of 30 regular industrialized cigarette smokers, exclusively. Hookah/cigarette group will be composed of 30 frequent smokers of narguile and industrialized cigarette. And control group will be composed of 30 non-smokers. Collection of cytological material will be performed on left border of the tongue for histochemical evaluation and right side for gene evaluation. Total non-stimulated saliva will be collected for evaluation of the salivary metabolome. Smears will be studied by Papanicolaou method and stained by Feulgen's method for analysis of micronuclei, metanuclear anomalies and cytomorphometry, and MHL1, MSH2, ATM, MRE11A, PMS2, XRCC1, MLH3 and PARs genes 1, 2, 3 and 4 gene expression. The analysis of the salivary metabolome will be performed by gas chromatography coupled to the mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Groups will be compared using ANOVA test, and when non-parametric will be treated by the Kruskal-Wallis test, with p <0.05 indicating a significant difference. Associations between experimental levels and clinical data will be explored using the Pearson correlation coefficient. (AU)
