Aquatic Oligochaeta assemblages as an alternative tool on environmental quality monitoring

Human activities in the territory have contributed to the reduction and quality of water resources. Biomonitoring programs are presented as a tool to characterize the conservation status of aquatic ecosystems. Thus, the present project aims the validation and the use of alternative methodologies of analysis utilizing Oligochaeta assemblages in biomonitoring programs of water and sediment quality. The data were obtained in an academic collaboration agreement signed between the researcher proposer and the Sector of Aquatic Communities of the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (CETESB). The samples come from the CETESB Sediment Quality Monitoring Network (period: 2014-2016) and the Project for methodological adequacy in the evaluation of environmental impacts in Conservation Units (2009-2016 period). Sixty points of different water bodies in the State of São Paulo were monitored, totalizing 264 samples distributed among reservoirs, rivers and streams. The sampling design provides the organization of the variables at two levels: (i) Physical and chemical variables of water quality and sediment, and (ii) Metrics of the Oligochaeta assemblies (Descriptive and Ecohydrological Approaches) calculated based on the species identification collected at the sampled points. For visualization of assembly patterns as well as modeling of the niche of the species considered, indicator will be used multivariate statistical analyzes associated to the adjustments of generalized linear models. The expected results in the present proposal have the potential to incorporate a new approach in the use of Oligochaeta assemblages in the diagnosis of continetal aquatic environments in State of São Paulo water quality. In addition to the academic gain, it intends to advance in the application of these new ecological approaches in routine analyzes of the environmental quality monitoring program of CETESB. (AU)
