Physics of exotic nuclei with the RIBRAS system


Studies involving light exotic nuclei are a field of research of great interest since it encompasses new phenomena such as nuclear halo, cluster structures, new magic numbers, even implications on fundamental problems of nuclear astrophysics such as the synthesis of heavy elements. In the RIBRAS system we produce secondary beams of light nuclei such as 6He, 7Be, 8Li, 8B, 10Be, 12B and others. Since 2004 we have carried out experiments involving the collision of several of these nuclei in targets, light, medium and heavy. In this period, a long program of elastic scattering, breakup and neutron transfer reactions in RIBRAS was developed. A further step is being taken to measure other reaction channels such as nuclear fusion and inelastic scattering which are very important for an understanding of structure aspects and reactions involving light exotic projectiles.Currently RIBRAS is a multi-user system that counts on the collaboration of more than 20 researchers from USP-SP, UFF-RJ, UNIFESP and international collaborators.The present project consists of the supply of liquid helium for maintenance of RIBRAS in the period 2019/2020 and the extension of the experimental apparatus for measurements of other reaction channels such as melting and inelastic scattering using a new matching particle-gamma detection system that is in the assembly phase.
