Etonogestrel implant in adolescent postpartum period: non-randomized clinical trial

Abstract

Adolescent pregnancy still has global rates above expectations. In Brazil, 16% of pregnant women are under 18 years and maternal mortality is high in this group. The offering of effective and safe contraceptive methods for adolescents is one of the most positive strategies to combat these numbers. Long-acting reversible contraceptives, including subdermal implants, are considered the first choice for this group, especially in the postpartum. Objectives: To evaluate the acceptance of the use of etonogestrel implant in adolescent postpartum period, its effectiveness and adverse effects over a year, as well as to analyze the relationship with body composition, ovarian ultrasonographic characteristics and satisfaction with the method, comparing these results with a group of adolescents who made use other contraceptive methods also started during the postpartum. Methods: A non-randomized and open clinical trial in which 100 postpartum adolescents will be followed for 1 year at the Centro de Atenção Integral à Saúde da Mulher/CAISM - Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The intervention group will be composed of patients who are interned in the Joint Housing and opt for the use of the subdermal implant, which will be inserted before discharge from hospital. The comparison group will have postpartum women who opt for the use of other contraceptive methods that will be offered at the postpartum review visit. (AU)
