Light-assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles/photosensitizers in polymeric matrix and its synergic application in phototherapies


Microorganism resistance to antibiotics and other drugs is a serious problem worldwide. Recovery from these multidrug resistant infections require multiple treatments, usually associated with toxicity and high costs. In this scenario, silver nanoparticles (AgNP) have been proposed due its strong antimicrobial activity and no induction of resistance mechanisms. AgNP also present a plasmonic band that, when combined with a photosensitizer (PS) molecule, promotes a synergic generation of reactive oxygen species in situ enhancing microorganism death. Despite the advantages, AgNP/PS combinations are under-explored, mainly due difficulties to control AgNP size and shape during its synthesis, that usually require the use of harsh conditions as strong reducing agents and high temperatures. The present project will introduce an innovative approach, using visible-light synthesis of AgNP in biocompatible polymers as matrix and stabilizing agent for the synthetized NPs. Through this process, AgNP properties are easily tuned in a one-pot eco-friendly synthesis. The polymer also serve as a matrix to encapsulate AgNP/PS nanohybrids to potentiate their antimicrobial applications. Once well characterized the synthetic procedure and AgNP/PS nanohybrids properties, their photodynamic activity against resistant bacteria will be explored. From this point, a wide range of applications will be open to further developments, such as the production of gel or film formulations, as well as biomedical applications in different pathologies will be considered.
