Effect of the plantar flexor muscles strengthening on the children gait with idiopathic equine foot: a randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract

The children gait with idiopathic toe walking is characterized by the premature activation of the plantar flexors and overlap their activity on the dorsiflexors muscles. In some cases the equinus may be caused by the triceps muscle weakness. Thus, the objective of the present study is to verify the effect of strengthening of the plantar flexors associated with conventional treatment in children with idiopatic toe walking. Thirty children with idiopatic toe walking diagnosis, between 5 and 11 years old, both genders, will be recruited and randomized into two groups: Control Group will be submitted to gait training, triceps muscle stretching, anterior tibial muscle strengthening and sensory motor training. Intervention Group will perform the same procedures of the Control Group added the triceps sural muscle strengthening. The interventions will last eight weeks. The evaluations will be composed by the gait kinematic analysis, dorsiflexion range of motion; anterior tibial and triceps muscles isometric dynamometry, motor coordination and quality of life. Six months after randomization (follow-up), the participants' quality of life will be reassessed. (AU)
