The relationship between communication and cognition in focus: the diagram as viewed by Peirce's and Deleuze's theories

Abstract

The reseach, contemplating the communication-cognition interface, focuses on comprehending the cognitive processes, which involve data gathering and connection inside the human mind, as well as explain the concept of diagram beyond taxonomies, following Deleuze's and Peirce's perspectives; to discuss the concept of analogy empathizing the treatment given to it by Deleuze and Peirce; to explain the concept of infography and conceptual map; to identify the specificities in the current research papers about such visual representations; to identify the conceptual map and the infography as diagrams as well as to seek modalities of analogy which such visual representations can propitiate and, finally, to identify the elements which can be pertinent to the elaboration of a image theory are the specific objectives. Theoretical and metodological contributions involve, mainly, the theories by Charles Sanders Peirce and by Gilles Deleuze, about diagrams, which are connected in this research to, thus, explain the cognitive potential of infographs and conceptual maps, not recurring to the inherent interpretations from psychology or verbal-visual language. The relevance of this research is in the possibility of treating aspects of this communication/cognition interface, as well as of suggesting ways for an image theory stemmed from Peircean and Deleuzean theories.
