Obtaining rubber tree genotypes adapted to different regions of the state of São Paulo with a view to increased rubber sustainability

Abstract

The most important character in the genetic improvement of the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss) Muell.-Arg. is the production of latex. However, the expression of this potential is usually influenced by several genetic factors inherent to the tree, such as vigor, bark thickness, resistance to wind, diseases, etc. and environmental factors such as: management practices, tapping, stimulation, planting density, nutrition, etc. The Genetic Improvement program adopted by the Agronomic Institute's (IAC) Rubber Center comprises three stages of selection. Initially, it is sought to obtain progenies, through controlled or open pollination, aiming at the formation of progeny nurseries. At two-and-a-half years based on preliminary production assessments through early testing, vigor and disease tolerance, oretes are selected and cloned to be tested in Small Scale Cloning Evaluation Experiments (EAPEs). In this second stage of selection, after the first year of tapping, the promising clones are multiplied and evaluated in Large Scale Claning Evaluation Experiments (EAGEs). Based on the above, the main objective of the project is to obtain superior rubber cultivars (clones) with high production potential and vigor, resistant to leaf blight caused by the fungus Microcyclus ulei (P. Henn.) V. Arx. for the different regions of the Plateau and Coast of the State of São Paulo. The project comprises 13 experiments covering three different groups. The first related Study and Selection of Progenies, the second the Small Scale Clones Assessment (EAPEs) and a third the Large Scale Clones Assessment (EAGEs), most of which are underway at the Centro de Seringueira and Sistema Agrflorestais of Instituto Agronômico (IAC). All involve from controlled pollination to the final release of clones at the producer level. In the evaluation of the experiments, among others will be considered rubber production, vigor, leaf diseases and tapping, crown shape with a view to wind resistance and quality of rubber produced by clone.
