Abstract

The prevention of caries disease and oral health should start in the earliest years of life. Despite all advances in healthcare, Brazil still has a high rate of dental caries, especially in children. Untreated caries induces to infection of root canal system and promote the needs to endodontic treatment in multiple visit. This treatment results in high cost, long clinical time and difficulty to perform this type of treatment, especially in pediatric patient. In addition, unsuccessful of the root treatment canal can induce early loss of primary teeth and impairs permanent teeth dentition. Although there are several intracanal medications for the root canal treatment, which have advantages and disadvantages, calcium hydroxide has shown good results. Because calcium hydroxide has main prerequisites of an intracanal medication such as broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, LPS neutralization and biocompatibility. However, calcium hydroxide has some disadvantages such as difficulty application, interference of vehicles in the efficacy, and long period (minimum 15 days) to eliminate microorganisms. Another important point is that intracanal medications available on the market, including formulations containing calcium hydroxide, generally do not have formulation that reach all requirements for use in primary teeth such as broad diffusion in the complex root canal system, more control of pH and more efficacy to reduce retreatment. Currently, nanotechnology can provide significant changes in vehicles or formulation to increase bioavailability, safety and efficacy of health products. The aim of this project is the development of a nanostructured release system containing calcium hydroxide to root canal treatment. This formulation should be more efficacy, easy to use and convenient to pediatric dentistry, safe and efficient in primary teeth. The project will be divided into 03 phases: development of the nanostructured release system containing calcium hydroxide with different biocompatible and safe ingredients, physicochemical characterization of the formulations and evaluation of endodontic sealer characteristics. Thus, the development of this project is according to the market and patients' needs for offering safe, effective, easy-to-use intracanal medication that provides a reduction in the cost of root canal treatment in teeth.
