Transnational exchanges for a critical and Socially-Inclusive approach to architecture and urban planning

Abstract

The complex and diverse socio-cultural landscape of Brazil continuously demands revisions of discourses on race, ethnicity, class, gender, and social justice that pose a deeper challenge to contemporary architects and urban planners. The study of urban patterns reflects existing and self-perpetuating power structures that systematically exclude certain portions of the population through design and city planning. This research initiative proposes the conjoint study of pedagogical, theoretical, and design practices centered on rewriting and renegotiating hegemonic history and spatial patterns in order to create multicultural and socially inclusive narratives through design.The project will bring together scholars from FAU-ESP and Harvard University, who will focus on the analysis of contemporary case studies in Brazil and their comparison with previously studied cases around the world. The scholars will share and test innovative and international research, pedagogical, and conceptual design methods that will be applied to the particular contexts and problematic of Brazilian metropolises. The outcomes of this research project will contribute to ongoing publications at FAU-USP, to the development of curricular units, and the production of co-authored articles.In addition, the Research Project aims to consolidate the prospective collaboration between FAU-USP and Harvard University established within the frames of the Thematic Project "Architecture and Urbanism Addressing The Social Space In The 21st Century: Segregation Strategies and Appropriation Tactics," supported by FAPESP (2016/22704-8).
