Online crowdfunding platform for professional translation and dissemination of ideas and knowledge in multiple languages

Abstract

Translation has always played a key role in spreading ideas, culture and knowledge. The technological advances of recent decades have led to an unprecedented production of information, and Internet has become a tremendous means for its storage and dissemination. As a consequence, since such content is produced in different languages, the demand for translation has also grown exponentially. A huge part of that demand is not supplied by professional translators, as it includes texts that are of interest to people and organizations of limited resources, which cannot afford their service. This project aims to create an online crowdfunding platform through which people and institutions that need the translation of the same content available on the Internet will be able to share the costs of that translation. Although crowdfunding has grown quickly and become more and more popular in recent years, there is currently no crowdfunding platform aimed specifically to the translation industry. In Phase 1, a functional prototype was created to confirm the technical viability of the proposed process. The activities in Phase 2 will include: changes in the platform core process to support restrict translation projects; creation of a process to support video translation and subtitling projects; creation of a process to support translation projects into the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras); continuous improvement of the algorithm to automatically extract source content; implementation of support to translation projects involving multiple currencies; study and application of internationalization strategies; continuous improvement of the algorithm to estimate translation project value, including its adaptation to languages other than English; implementation of a system to automatically identify content for which translation is allowed; and the creation of a certified translators database. The platform resulting from this project will allow the company to create a new market niche and satisfy a currently unmet demand, building a bridge between professional translators, people interested in having access to translated content, and content creators. Moreover, by making translations available to the public, the platform will favor the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge in different languages through the Internet. (AU)
