Space-based gravitational wave astronomy

Abstract

We propose to investigate a number of research problems relevant to the detection and analysis of gravitational wave (GW) signals observable by space-based interferometers. The LaserInterferometer Space Antenna (LISA) project and the Antenna for Mid-Band InterferometricGravitational wave Observations (AMIGO) mission are expected to uncover a wealth of information about the Universe through the detection of gravitational radiation in frequency bandscomplementary to that of Earth-based detectors (such as LIGO and VIRGO). The work here proposed is particularly timing as (i) the LISA's working group activities have been resumed followingthe ESA's confirmation of the project as a L3 mission, and (ii) the system design architecture and assessment of the scientific capabilities of the AMIGO mission will need to be completed by theend of the year 2020. As a member of both the LISA Simulation and Data Analysis working groups and leader of the AMIGO mission concept activities, I will be in the unique position to expose the INPE astrophysics community to the current research problems faced by these two fascinating GW missions. In addition I will facilitate the involvement of interested INPE scientists in the research activities I will be pursuing while in Sao Jose' dos Campos. The year I will spend at INPE will allow me to resume my collaboration with members of the faculty, engage several graduate students, and give a graduate course in the 2019 INPE graduate school in Astrophysics. I should add that, although this document is written in English (the language I am presently most comfortable with), the course and the material I will present at the 2019 INPE graduate school in Astrophysics will be given in Portuguese as I am also fluent in this language.
