Abstract: The number of people worldwide aged 60 or over will triple from 2010 to 2050 (from 760 million to 2 billion), due to the mortality decline caused by major medical achievements and technological advances. Statistical projections show that Brazil will occupy, in 2025, the sixth position in relation to the contingent of elderly people in the world, with about 32 million elderly people. However, the great growth of this population is accompanied by a considerable increase of clinical conditions related to old age and, consequently, to the increase in public health expenditures. Thus, it is extremely important to develop studies on the aging process, in order to provide better quality of life for the elderly. The objective of this study is to investigate how genetic variations and physical activity can modulate the telomere size and the proteomic profile of individuals, influencing their health during the aging process. In aim to do this, saliva samples will be collected from sedentary and physically active people between 60 and 75 years to evaluate the markers mentioned above. The size of the telomeres and the proteomic profile will be correlated with the genetics and individual physical capacity. (AU)
