Planning of Modern Production Systems in the Context of Industry 4.0 and Smart Grid

Abstract

Currently, the term "Industry 4.0" (I40) has been used to bring manufacturing automation to a new level with inclusion of technologies that allow mass flexible production. However, in the current world scenario, disturbances in the electrical networks have caused considerable financial losses in the industrial and commercial sectors. Among the main causes are the aging of the electrical grids and the lack of preparation of electric utilities to deal with technologies associated with Smart Grids (SGs) and I4.0. Poor power quality can lead to damaged equipment, loss of productivity and product quality, and discourage public and private investments in I4.0. This is an important point because it correlates the need for modern technologies in production processes with the need for a reliable power supply. Therefore, I4.0 can reach its desired level when the power grid is properly inserted in the context of SGs. In this context, this project aims to propose methods, procedures and systems that make productive processes more resilient to electrical disturbances and more prepared to receive technologies coming from I4.0 in the current and future scenarios. For this, mathematical models that correlate the electrical grid and productive processes will be studied, adapted and treated in an integrated way during operational and expansion planning of the electric networks. This perspective will allow utilities to better guide their investments to attend industrial consumers already prepared for I4.0 technologies. The results of this project allow to identify problems and propose solutions not only for industrial customers, but also for electric utilities, as well as to suggest performance indicators that guide regulatory agencies in strategic planning during the deployment of technologies associated with I4.0 and SGs.
