Study of Jupiter magnetospheric auroral radio activity variability

Abstract

This projects aims to perform data analyses of Jupiter auroral radio emissions from Nançay radiotelescope and from Cassini spacecraft. Recently a database of Nançay radiotelescopic decametric observations has been compiled from 1990 to 2018. Further, a catalog of radio emissions at kilometric, hectometric and decametric ranges from Cassini Jupiter flyby (2000-2001) has been compiled. These database will be used to study the Jupiter magnetospheric and auroral variability in several timescales and to study the causes of its variability: solar wind external forcing, internal forcing due to energetic magnetospheric events or Io volcanic eruptions, Jupiter-Galilean moons interaction effects, and observational effcts (declinaton, distance Jupiter-Earth). This data analysis will be performed in the current collaboration with Observatoire de Paris-Meudon and Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. The dynamic spectra of radio observations will be analysed, deriving the emission power as function of frequency and time. Also time series of integrated radio fluxes and emission characteristics: sources, polarization, duration and maximum frequency, will be analysed. The methods to perform these analyses are Fourier transform, Lomb-Scargle periodogram, wavelet analysis, superposed epoch analysis and cross-correlation analysis. It is the goal of this project to acquire computers to make the data processing and have financial support to visit the Observatoire de Paris and UFRN, and to bring guests to INPE to have discussions with the scientific colleagues, as well as to present the results in scientific confererences.
