Abstract

The present project proposes to continue epidemiological studies, at a regional level, to identify amplifier hosts responsible for frequent epidemics of diseases caused by tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV) and tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) in solanaceous crops in different producing regions of the country. Basic studies of the molecular characteristics of begomovirus and crinivirus, as well as virus/vector/plant interactions will be continued, to broaden understanding of the pathosystems. At the end, it is intended to establish sustainable alternatives for the management of these diseases, mainly in tomato, potato and pepper crops. To achieve this objective, the proposal is presented in five modules with the following specific objectives: (1) Molecular biology - detection, molecular characterization of begomovirus and gene flow in Bemisa tabaci MEAM1; (2) Virus-vector-plant relationships - population and behavioral studies of B. tabaci MEAM1 and MED and virus/plant relationships; (3) Regional epidemiology - identify the presence and performance of amplifiers hosts in epidemics; (4) Sources of inoculum: to identify the importance of alternative hosts in the epidemiology of both diseases; (5) The vector - studying biological parameters; (6) Management - to study different management alternatives, such as biological control of the vector, induced resistance, screening germplasm for genetic resistance, premunziation and cultural management.
