Energy efficiency of air conditioners: assessment of Law 10,295, scenarios of energy consumption and generation of technical information to support decision-making


In Brazil, between 1990 and 2016, the consumption of electricity for space cooling jumped from 10TWh to 32 TWh. The rapid diffusion of these air conditioners in commercial and residential buildings has shifted peak demand and also has caused an increase in the demand for electricity, which can be intensified in case of increases of the global temperature as indicated in climate change scenarios. In order to increase the energy efficiency of air conditioners, the country in 2007 established specific regulations regarding minimum standards of energy performance for air conditioners. The present project aims to contribute with the development of a methodology to estimate the impacts of these regulations and also to evaluate future scenarios of electricity consumption contemplating stricter restrictions of energy efficiency coefficients. It also proposes an assessment of energy efficiency options and their respective costs from the perspective of society and consumers, and an accounting for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, therefore generating diverse technical information to support decision-making related to the Law Nº 10.295/2001, known as the Energy Efficiency Law.
