Abstract

Experiments will be performed to better understand physiological aspects related to ovulation and maintenance of pregnancy in bovine females submitted to artificial insemination (AI) or embryo transfer (ET). In addition, studies will evaluate strategies to increase efficiency and/or simplify the use of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) or embryo production protocols. Twenty-six experiments will be performed within six main themes, three of them about reproductive physiology (1 - Mechanisms involved in the maintenance of pregnancy; 2 - Ovarian, uterine and endocrine changes in response to different treatments or hormonal concentrations; 3 - Ovarian dynamics and embryo quality in FTAI protocols) and other three focused on reproductive biotechnologies (4 - Reproductive efficiency in Nelore cows and heifers submitted to FTAI protocols; 5 - Reproductive efficiency in dairy cows submitted to FTAI protocols; 6 - In vivo embryo production in superovulated cows inseminated with refrigerated sexed spermatozoa), in both beef cattle and dairy cattle. In these experiments, approximately 20,000 animals will be used. We will be performing sperm evaluations of the sires used, ovarian and transrectal uterine ultrasound examinations, blood sampling for hormone assays, and uterine flushings (when appropriate) to study ovarian and uterine dynamics and functions, embryo quality and fertility.
