Use of inorganic supramolecular structures for the development of functional molecules and controlled release of bioactive species

Abstract

This proposal has two main objectives, which are: (1) the introduction of the study of extended structures in the context of Supramolecular Chemistry in my research group and (2) the investigation of biological properties by introducting the study of combined nanoparticle - trinuclear ruthenium acetates systems. In more general terms, the objective is to investigate extended structures obtained from coordination complexes, ligands of interest and nanoparticles, in order to obtain functional supramolecular systems. The axis that combines the two proposals is my experience in Coordination Chemistry and the development of ruthenium metallo-drugs. In the work front (1) it is desired to combine ruthenium trinuclear acetates of the general formula [Ru3O(CH3COO)6(L)2L]n in which L = pyridine linkers and L'= ligands of the naphthalenoimides (NI) family and naphthalenediimides (NDI). The complexes were chosen because they are electroactive units, presenting from four to five monoeletronic processes in the working window of organic solvents like acetonitrile, all of them accompanied by chromatic changes. The NI and NDI ligands constitute a family of chromophores that exhibit solvatocromism, light emission with color modulatable by coordination or derivatization of the structure with substituent groups and possibility of aggregation formation by pi-stacking given their planar and hydrophobic structures. It is expected to obtain extended structures both by weak interactions depending on the characteristics of the linkers and by coordination of more than one bridge complex unit with the naphthalenedimid linkers. The expectation is that these structures present phenomena such as photocurrent and long lifetime states of charge separation. In the work front (2), it is intended to functionalize Fe3O4 core-shell nanoparticles protected by mesoporous silica with ruthenium trinuclear acetates whose biological activity has already been observed in previous projects. This project aims at the planning and chemical physical characterization of these combined systems, aiming to investigate, at a later stage, improvement in the biological activity of the complexes due to the greater selectivity to the target introduced by the nanoparticles and also the possible combination of the biological activity with the possibility of diagnosis, since the nanoparticles in question are used in NMR image construction.
