In recent decades with the population growth and the increase in industrial activity, the energy demand has increased significantly. However, the major source of energy consumed is fossil fuels. The burning of fossil fuels increases the quantity of greenhouse gases in atmosphere that can lead to global warming. Among these gases, carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect. Thus, the development of new technologies for the production of clean energy through sustainable routes is fundamental. Among these technologies the process of photoconversion of CO2 (artificial photosynthesis) into value-added products, such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, organic acids and others, can be highlighted. In this context, this project aims to develop niobium oxide-based semiconductors (Nb2O5) modified with iron (Fe) and/or zinc (Zn) for the photoreduction of CO2 in products with added value. In addition, a detailed study of the structure and morphology of the materials was carried out, as well as theoretical computational studies, which support the investigation of photocatalytic properties. For the structural and morphological study, materials were characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Raman scattering spectroscopy, diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and nitrogen physisorption. Theoretical studies were carried out aiming at a greater understanding of the electronic properties as well as the mechanisms involved in the CO2 of photoconversion process. (AU)
