Abstract

The rehabilitation process of cleft lip and palate involves several surgical procedures, including orthognathic surgery that aims to correct skeletal deformities that may remain until adulthood. Complications after orthognathic surgery include changes in sensitivity in areas close to the peripheral branches of the maxillary and mandibular nerves, being mainly related of local anatomy of the osteotomy specificities. Studies have shown that photobiostimulation therapy favors the regeneration process of nerve tissue. Therefore it is an alternative to improve and accelerate the rehabilitation of facial areas after orthognathic surgery. In the field of nursing care and interventions, low intensity laser therapy is an instrumental and functional possibility in rehabilitation process. The purpose of this study is investigate the effect of photobiostimulation, applied in low intensity laser therapy, on recovery nervous sensitivity after orthognathic surgery in individuals with repaired cleft lip and palate. A method will be developed for the clinical study with control group and random allocation to be performed at the Laboratory of Physiology of HRAC-USP. The proposed application protocol includes intra- and postoperative photobiostimulation intervention, with subsequent follow-up of local sensitivity recovery. The expected results of this study are build evidence that supports the practice of laser therapy as adjuvant in the process of nerve tissue rehabilitation, recovering better and in a shorter time the sensitivity of the areas commonly affected by the orthognathic surgery.
