Communication and memory in water governance and climate change adaptation

Abstract

We seek to understand the dynamics of social, digital and communication processes that support stories, memories and narratives of adaptation to the potential effects of climate change that may have a particular role in generating resilience in communities and hydro-citizenship. The main goal is to recognize and disseminate shared experiences of action in participatory water governance for the benefit of communities at environmental risk in order to transform the understanding of the potential effects of climate change by exploring the activation, preservation and circulation of memories and narratives through digital media. Empirical research will be carried out within one of the main river basins supplying the city of São Paulo, around the respective committee: Alto Tietê (CBH-AT). The main contribution will be through the creation of actionable knowledge capable of assisting decision-making and environmental governance, developed based on organizational memories of water management and water activism stories and memories, taking the form of contents in digital media on how personal and collective involvement with actions and policies aimed at mitigation and adaptation to climate change has been developing in the country. Actionable knowledge available on an innovative digital platform, built from a framework of 'information systems in society', will be an asset to institutions of water governance and practices of public communications and popularization of science.
