Metals in São Paulo reservoirs sediment: support to decision-making and European experience in reservoir management

Abstract

This project aims to strengthen the collaboration between research groups coordinated by Prof. Dr. Eduardo Vicente, Professor of Ecology, Department of Microbiology and Ecology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Valencia (Burjassot Campus, Valencia, Spain), with the group coordinated by me at the Department of Ecology, Institute of Biosciences, of the São Paulo University. The activities planned for this visit will also be open to the already solid research partners of the Paulista State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP), of the Sorocaba Campus, but also of the recent collaborations at the Federal University of ABC, particularly in the Engineering Center, Modeling and Applied Social Sciences and the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), in the Campus of Diadema, the latter two in a recent collaboration financed by Fapesp, under the general coordination of Prof. Dr. Roseli Benassi. During the stay of the visiting professor, scheduled for October 2018, there will be many activities. Among the planned activities, we have lectures with more general and specific topics, the latter related to the Water Framework Directive (WFD), the European water resources management standard. In addition, it is also planned to teach courses in Ecology (IB/USP), to be given jointly to the PPG in Environmental Sciences (PPG-CA), UNESP of Sorocaba, and open to partners and stakeholders. Also, there will be teacher meetings with graduate students to discuss themes of their interests, including analysis and discussion of their masters or doctoral data, or even projects still under development. Summing up the work in field activities and in the laboratory, how much will we compare and discuss the routine methods applied here and in the group coordinated by Prof. Edward. We will also finalize the writing of two papers already in the initial phase of data analysis. One of them discusses geochronology and radionuclide dating of sediment profiles collected in the dam area, their respective concentrations of metals and paleopigments. Another paper discusses a comparative of the invasive species here and in the reservoirs of the river Ebro, the dinoflagellate Ceratium furcoides. We will also continue with studies using images from the Sentinel 2 satellite in the study of water quality and sediment and their relation to the uses and occupations of spaces. During his visit he will also participate as a titular member of the doctoral defense bank in the PPG-CA. (AU)
