Abstract

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is a relevant risk factor for maternal and fetal complications. Nutritional intervention studies conducted among overweight pregnant women presented controversial results, and research carried out in low and middle-income countries is scarce. The objective of the present study will be to evaluate the effectiveness of a nutritional intervention based on the incentive to the consumption of minimally processed foods and the practice of physical activities in the adequacy of the weight gain in adult pregnant women with overweight. A randomized controlled trial will be conducted at primary healthcare units in Ribeirão Preto, SP. Adult pregnant women who are overweight and receiving prenatal care in the public health system will be included. Women will be randomly allocated into control (who will receive the usual prenatal care) or intervention groups (who will participate in three individualized nutritional counseling sessions). The recruitment of the participants will be carried out at six health facilities for twelve months when it is expected to reach a sample of 300 women. Anthropometric data, sociodemographic, blood pressure, biochemical, lifestyle, optimism, life satisfaction, and sadness data will be obtained at baseline (up to 16th weeks of gestation), and second assessments (34th to 36th weeks of gestation). The relative risk (95% CI) will be estimated to evaluate the impact of the nutritional intervention program on the adequacy of weight gain. (AU)
