Development of new UV-C phosphor applied to biological decontamination


Among different physical and chemical agents, the UV radiation appears to be an important route for inactivation of resistant microorganisms. The present project introduces the study of new UV phosphors to create a new mercury-free Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) flat lamp, where the biocide action comes from the UV emission produced by rare-earth phosphor obtained by spray pyrolysis, following plasma excitation. Specifically, different rare earth ions could be test, but in our group we have obtained interesting results by the inter-configurations (4f15d1à4f2) emission transitions of Pr3+ in some solids particles, as lanthanum orthophosphate (LaPO4) and calcium pyrophosphate (Ca2P2O7) doped with Pr3+. The proposal has goal on a transversal theme physicochemistry-biology, and the presence of Professor Bruno in our group at FFCLRP is going to be very important, and that visit could be essential to test different matrix and determine future bactericidal experiments with several gram-positive and gramnegative bacterial strains. In addition, the experimental setup at high energy is mandatory too for the purpose of new UV-c phosphors and the visit of Professor Bruno will help us to organize at the Chemistry Department of the FFCLRP, experimental set up for plasma excitation spectroscopy and ultraviolet vacuum analysis.
