Identification of material models for numerical simulation of powder pressing

Numerical simulation is an important tool to reduce production costs and improve the control of properties and dimensions of parts produced by pressing and sintering of powders. However, the numerical simulation of such process is complex because the constitutive models demand a great number of parameters. The proposal of this project is the identification of constitutive models for computer modeling of (polymeric, ceramic or metallic) powder pressing. Mechanical tests, special molds, and finite element models will be developed for the identification, calibration, and validation of such models. The parameters will be identified and calibrated by procedures based on mechanical tests as: uniaxial compression, uniaxial tension and diametral compression (Brazilian test). Specimens will be processed by uniaxial or isostatic pressing in different levels of porosity. The Digital Image Correlation is a full-field technique that will be used to obtain the displacement and strain fields during the mechanical tests. The validation procedure of the models will be carried out in rigid dies instrumented with pressure sensors and projected with special geometries for the purpose of induce different loading paths (according to the levels of deviatoric and normal stresses) in different regions of the specimen during the pressing. Also, the validation of the models will consider some pressing variables such as: the final geometry of the specimen, stresses recorded by the pressure sensors and density distribution. These variables will be experimentally measured and obtained by numeric simulation using the finite element method via ABAQUS software. If the differences between experimental and numeric results are within a confidence interval the constitutive model will be taken as valid. (AU)
