TEMPERATURE MODULATED OPTICAL REFRACTOMETRY: A MOLECULAR PERSPECTIVE ON CURING KINETIC AND PHASE SEPARATION OF LIGNIN-BASED POLYURETHANES

Abstract

Kraft lignin has been widely proposed as raw material for polymer developments. Considerable efforts have been concentrated on the development of lignin based polyurethanes, which resulted into materials with several properties. On other hand, there is a lack in the literature concerning the curing kinetic and homogeneity of lignin based PU, mainly from a molecular perspective. This type of investigation requires the monitoring of specific thermodynamic parameter, i.e., volume expansion coefficient, which allows accessing molecular organization and cohesion. A novel experimental technique, temperature modulated optical refractometry (TMOR), was developed, which has the capability to determine and monitor the static and dynamic volume expansion coefficients of polymers. TMOR is able to identify and differentiate static, kinetic and dynamic molecular contributions to volume expansion coefficient changes. In this context, TMOR can be applied on investigation of polymer structure changes caused by phase transition, glass transitions and other structure-related transformation. In this study, this innovative technique will be applied for curing kinetic and homogeneity investigation of lignin-based polyurethanes, obtained from different types of Kraft lignin, applied as polyol. Discussion of TMOR results will be supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (RMN), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning force microscopy (SFM) techniques. Results will contribute to lignin reuse, polyurethane developments, roll-out and dissemination of such novel technique (TMOR) in São Paulo, through scientific collaboration with Prof. Kruger, TMOR´s inventor.
