Development of hybrid polymer nanofibers for agricultural applications

Abstract

The agribusiness represents one of the most important sectors of Brazilian economy, having crucial relevance in GDP value, job generation, balance of trade and food supply. For Brazil to continue with this leadership, it becomes necessary to keep the investments in research, development and innovation, where the research in novel functional materials and nanotechnology can give a great contribution. For instance, nanomaterial as nanofibers and nanoparticles represent an enormous possibility of applications in the agribusiness sector, due to the appealing features such as large surface area/volume ratio, flexibility, adjustable morphology and possibility of chemical functionalization. In this project is proposed the development of hybrid polymer nanofiber for application in agriculture, seeking synergism of properties between the distinct materials, in order to enhance their final properties. Specifically, here it is proposed the development of hybrid polymeric nanofibers to be used in chemical, electrochemical and optical sensors for detecting analytes related to agriculture, as well as slow release systems of agricultural inputs. The hybrid polymer nanofibers will be produced and modified by the electrospinning, solution blow spinning, Layer-by-Layer (LbL) self-assembly and dip-coating techniques, using conducting polymers, polyelectrolytes, biodegradable polymers, ceramic and metallic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and antimicrobial agents. The hybrid platforms will be characterized by advanced analytical techniques such as electronic, atomic force and optical microscopies, UV-Vis, FTIR, Raman, XPS, fluorescence, optical, chemical and electrochemical spectroscopies, and X-ray and thermal analysis, which will allow the optimization of the hybrid nanofibers composed of distinct materials for applications in the agriculture.
